April 25, 2023, Auburn, CA – The Auburn State Theatre (AST) is beginning repair work on the auditorium interior this week with stabilization of the room environment. Initial assessments have been done by the City of Auburn building inspector and private contractors. Planning is underway to determine the full scope of the repair work and restoration actions that need to be taken.
As previously shared on April 19, 2023, the historic State Theatre in Auburn, CA, had to temporarily close to the public to address interior building damage. After ceiling cracks were noticed initially, a large section of the auditorium ceiling plaster and framework came down on the morning of April 18, 2023, triggering the fire alarm system in the empty auditorium.
During the assessment process and due to the age of the historic venue, AST retained an environmental contractor to do asbestos testing, which returned a positive result showing asbestos in the ceiling debris samples. At this time, the first phase of repair will be for the environmental contractor to secure and close off the auditorium and finalize a plan of action for the abatement and remediation of that area.
Work is being done in the “critical barrier area,” which encompasses only the theatre auditorium. This temporary closure of the State Theatre auditorium does not affect the AST on-site offices or other businesses in the multi-use complex. Additionally, the exterior building roof is intact and did not collapse or sustain damage.
“We want to thank our patrons, volunteers, performers, employees, tenants, and the community for the outpouring of support. We will keep you apprised as we move forward with caring for our beloved Theatre,” shared AST Board of Directors President Chris Walsh.
With a full slate of performances scheduled for 2023, AST is working as quickly as possible to reopen but is emphasizing safety and proper historical restoration to ensure the auditorium will be a staple in the community for decades to come. Several events will continue even as repairs are undertaken, including the Big Day of Giving on May 4, 2023, Auburn Vintage Home Tour May 7, 2023, and the annual street party fundraiser, Cocktails & Cinema, on June 3, 2023.
