History Expedition Presents
Western States Trail - The Sierra Gem
For over 10,000 years, the trail we now call ‘Western States’, has served as a thoroughfare for civilizations occupying its surrounding land. Native Americans established the trail for migration and sustenance, moving east to west following the seasons and hunting, fishing, and foraging. The Gold Rush of 1849 attracted hopeful emigrants from across the globe, the trail became a major artery for transporting mining equipment to the dozens of mines that sprouted hanging from the steep canyon walls, along the ridges and deep into the riverbed. In the 1900s the trail again awakened, retraced by Watson and Robie and revitalized by establishing a competitive endurance horse race, the Tevis Cup, then later a run, the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run. Today the Western States Trail is enjoyed by thousands of outdoor enthusiasts from hikers, bikers, equestrians, and runners and on its way to becoming designated a National Recreation Trail to assure its preservation in history and our lives, in perpetuity.
