Two brothers from Pennsylvania discovered silver in 1857 in the “blue mud” of gold miners near Silver City, NV. The Ethan Allen and Hosea Ballou Grosh discovered three “monster veins” and were on the precipice of capitalizing on what would become the world’s largest concentration of mineral worth ($5 billion in today’s dollar). Then fate intervened and tragedy struck. This is their compelling story told through the experience of the Grosh Brothers Expedition Team who will have just completed a reprise of their fateful 100-mile trek from Silver City, NV to Last Chance, CA to honor the brothers’ spirit of adventure and courage to endure.
In addition, the Expedition Team will discuss their recently published article proving their belief, after extensive research of primary sources, diaries and correspondence, that the Grosh Brothers are the discoverers of the Comstock Lode and their family was robbed of their rightful financial claim.
Beyond the historical research, the Expedition Team conducted extensive field surveys in the Virginia City vicinity, Washoe and Sierra Mountains to identify the route taken in the winter of 1857 by Ethan Allen Grosh and his companion Richard M. Bucke. As part of this research, they consulted with historians, archeologists, archival museums and libraries, cultural interpreters, authors, and numerous historical societies.
